*PRESS STATEMENT BY LATEEF OMOYEMI AKANGBE, SAN, ON THE ABDUCTION OF BARRISTER ISYAKU MUHAMMED DANJUMA*
I am deeply saddened by the news of the abduction of Barrister Isyaku Muhammed Danjuma of Sudan Chambers, Kontagora, who was taken by armed bandits in Ibeto town, Magama Local Government Area of Niger State, during a broad daylight raid on our nation’s Independence Day. This is a most painful reminder of the insecurity that continues to afflict our people, even on a day meant for national celebration.
What makes this incident even more tragic is that Barrister Danjuma had just raised an alarm about the presence of these criminals on his social media page, before being taken away in full view of the community. The fact that such a brazen attack could happen, without timely rescue or deterrence, shows the urgent need for decisive action to secure our people.
Only a few days ago, another young lawyer, Barrister Onyesom Peace Udoka, newly called to the Bar, was abducted along with her sister near Lokoja. She was released after days in captivity. The repeated targeting of lawyers is disturbing, but beyond that, it reflects the larger truth: every Nigerian today lives under fear of abduction or violent attack.
We must all speak up. We must all act. The government at all levels must treat this matter as an emergency. Our security agencies must rise to their duty to protect lives and property. Citizens cannot continue to be left at the mercy of criminal gangs who now operate openly without consequence.
At this moment, my heart goes out to the family of Barrister Danjuma, to his colleagues, and to all others who have been taken by these criminals. I urge Nigerians to keep them in our thoughts and prayers, and to remain united in demanding a safer, more secure country.
This is not just about one lawyer, or one community, it is about the soul of our nation. A country where citizens live in fear is a country that cannot grow. May the Almighty intervene to secure the release of Barrister Danjuma and all others in captivity, and may peace return to our land.
Signed:
