Dear Senate President Akpabio,
AN OPEN LETTER TO THE UNCOMMON DISTINQUISHED SENATE PRESIDENT, SENATOR GODSWILL AKPABIO TO STEP ASIDE TO ALLOW FOR TRANSPERENT AND FAIR INVESTIGATION DEVIOD OF ANY INTIMIDATION.
The above subject refers.
I am Clement Chukwuemeka, a concerned Nigerian and a Convener of Democratic Tenets in Nigeria. A Former Chairman of a Branch of Nigerian Bar Association, and a Former 2nd Vice President, of Nigerian Bar Association.
I, and other concerned Democrats in Nigeria and across the globe write to urge you to step down as the Senate President pending the deliberation of the Ethics and Privileges Committee of the Senate regarding the serious allegations of sexual harassment, intimidation and gender bullying made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against you.
There is no doubt over your integrity and your uncommon disposition as a lawyer as well as a law maker, having observed your leadership acumen right from as a governor, gives credence of a reserved gentle man with humane and uncommon attributes which resonates the reasons why you should step aside to allow fair, Just and equitable investigation that every concerned Nigeria will be glad to recall your uncommon name in all ramification.
These allegations are extremely anti international relation, so disturbing to the fabric and soul of Nigerians and have brought the integrity of the Senate into question. It is imperative that you step down to allow for a fair and unbiased investigation into these allegations. Your continued presence as Senate President, in the mind of average human, will suggest an undermined legitimacy of the investigation and shall surely create a perception of impunity.
We draw your attention to the fact that similar allegations have been made against past leaders of the Senate and no need of mentioning names, and in those instances, the leaders stepped down to allow for investigations. We urge you to follow this precedent and step down pending the outcome of the investigation.
Furthermore, Section 36 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) guarantees the right to fair hearing. By stepping down, you will ensure that the investigation is conducted fairly and without coercion, interference or influence from your position as Senate President.
Additionally, the Senate’s Rules and Standing Orders provide for the investigation of allegations of misconduct against members. It is essential that these rules are followed to ensure that the investigation is conducted in a transparent and accountable manner.
We urge you to take the following steps:
a. Step down as Senate President, pending the outcome of the investigation
b. Cooperate fully with the Ethics and Privileges Committee’s investigation
c. Allow for a transparent and fair investigation into the allegations made against you.
d. Present yourself uncommonly and suspend all privileges accruable to you and your office to demonstrate your love for the rule of law and for the betterment of Nigeria while being investigated.
By taking these steps, you will demonstrate your commitment to upholding the integrity of the Senate and ensuring that the investigation is conducted uncommonly, fairly and without interference.
I and other Democrats, look forward to your prompt and despatch, towards acceding to the democratic call in the overall interest of Nigeria.
